Floating a River at Risk: Exploring the Hidden Colorado River

A vital water source for more than 20 million people, the Colorado River is hidden deep in scenic canyons as it courses through northern Arizona’s rugged landscape. The river is deeply contested, too, as it serves competing needs in water supply, the generation of electricity, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Take this spectacular opportunity to raft the river through scenic Glen Canyon as you hear from researchers and managers plying the delicate task of applying science to river management. You’ll get a walking tour of Glen Canyon Dam, an important source of electricity for Arizona and the Southwest. Then you’ll embark on a three-and-a-half hour guided raft trip through some of the most sublime canyon scenery in the Southwest. There are no rapids on this stretch of the Colorado—just red sandstone walls and deep blue-green water. Along the way you’ll learn from NAU experts and others about water usage, native fish conservation, sediment distribution, recreational needs, and some of the many other issues that make management of the Colorado through Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Grand Canyon National Park so challenging.

$130; pre-registration required. Breakfast and lunch included. The tour will depart the Drury Inn at 7 AM and return at 6 PM. No paddling required; the rafts are motorized. You’ll take a walking tour of the dam, but on the river trip will need to walk only short distances. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses; consider wearing long sleeves and pants. It’s best to bring layered clothing, as temperatures are likely to be cool in the morning and late afternoon, but quite warm at midday (the brave may want to bring a bathing suit). A rain jacket or windbreaker is a good idea. Wear comfortable footwear appropriate for walking; your shoes may become wet and sandy while getting on and off the rafts.

September 21 Update: There is some room left on this field trip. If you would like to bring one (1) guest, spouse, or partner, please call 888.444.9879 to add one space to your registration. No minors.
